  2. Day 2 Bogotá walking tour at the old quarter of la Candelaria and transfer to Villa de Leyva

In the morning, we’ll have a walking tour through the heart of Bogotá’s old quarter, known as La Candelaria, with numerous restored, 300-year old homes and public buildings. Our tour passes through Plaza Bolívar, San Francisco Church, the lively pedestrian street Calle 11 (known for its countless family-owned local restaurants) and, time permitting, the 17th-century Santa Clara Convent.

The day’s highlight is a visit to the world-renown Gold Museum, which houses over 33,400 gold pieces from Colombia’s pre-Hispanic cultures. Here, we will learn about how gold was once used for political and social purposes, in myths, offerings and finally, the metallurgical techniques used to work with gold. This is only an introduction to the cultural history around the gold of pre-Hispanic cultures as well as the Spanish’s lust for this precious metal, following the 1502 landing party led by Vasco Nunez de Balboa. After visiting the Gold Museum, we head to the north of Bogota and make our way to Villa de Leyva (3 hr drive). Once in Villa de Leyva, we will check in at the hotel. (B)

Comfort Hotel, Posada de San Antonio

  3. Day 3 Hike to Iguaque National Natural Park

Starting at 2,700 m.a.s.l, this hike can be completed at several levels, from Easy to Difficult. On the Easy hike you’ll appreciate the Andean cloudforest and on the Difficult version of the hike, you’ll climb to 3,600 m.a.s.l to reach the sacred lagoon of Iguaque. Set your own pace and let the amazing treasures of the mountains surprise you. (B)

  4. Day 4 Transfer to Barichara and hike to Juan Curi waterfalls

In the morning, we’ll drive to Barichara where we will check in at the hotel. After resting after our trip from Villa de Leyva, we continue to the Juan Curi Waterfalls, located in a small nature reserve. A 2.5-mile forest hike will take us along a limestone river path to a refreshing pool at the base of a waterfall. Along the hike, you’ll enjoy the sight of butterflies, hummingbirds and other bird species.  (B)

    Comfort Hotel, La Nube Posada

  5. Day 5 Rafting in Suárez River

On the upper section of the Suárez Canyon, the river grows rapidly and is the country’s top, one-day high-volume whitewater run. You’ll navigate through thrilling rapids and huge waves, starting with Class III rapids; gradually increasing to Class V near the end and a lovely pool you can safely swim in. There is never a dull moment on this river, which features huge waves, constantly changing weather conditions and water levels. Pools at the end of each rapid make this river a fun, safe, commercial-grade run. When we’re not digging deep to get to the next rapid, we’ll be enjoying the scenery in the gorge and may even spot native bird species in the trees. We’ll enjoy a tasty and nutritious riverfront snack before returning to Barichara. (B)

    Comfort Hotel, La Nube Posada

  6. Day 6 Mountain bike ride in Chicamocha gorge and transfer to Bucaramanga

This spectacular ride starts at 6,000 feet (2,000 meters) and dives down into the second-deepest canyon in the world, the Chicamocha Canyon. Passing waterfalls, coffee and tobacco farms, we’ll ride to Jordán, a historic pueblo (town) 1000 feet above sea level. This is one place most tourists don’t have an opportunity to visit. Here, we stop at a refreshing natural pool to cool off, have a swim and enjoy a fantastic lunch! Once we´ve had time to relax and soak in the sunshine, we’ll hop on our 4×4 and climb out of this magnificent canyon for our final downhill destination. This is a fast and smooth sunset descent to the gorgeous natural pools outside the town of Curiti. Afterwards, we’ll make our way to Bucaramanga where we’ll spend the night.  (B, L)
